Presentation today - Work cover -with Jay Lewis
• New laws came out in January 2012
• Changes to the names
• In line with other states in Australia
• Previously known as Employer is now known as PCBU
• Previously known as a employee is now known as a worker (somebody engaged)
• Worked can be casual, fulltime, contractors, apprentices, volunteers.
• Basically work cover is common law.
• Common law – to look after people doing work for you
• Ensure premises are safe,
• Ensure machines are safe
• Responsibility to train and adequately show OHS procedures have been taught
• Need to have good systems in place
• Manage risks
• Risk consultations with your workers to find out if there is any concerns
• PCBUs have a legal responsibility to talk to all engaged workers
• Consult between different parties. Example; you have a worker, and you rent a shop, and the body corp. need to all be talking and aware of issues.
• All employers (PCBUs) have a duty of care
• Volunteers need to be looked after aswell.
• Need to identify possible risks
• Notify people – PCBUs, workers
• There is a code of practice now with work cover
• For more information go to http://www.workcover.nsw.gov.au/Pages
Please note this is just nbotes - for full information please refer to the website. Gurney Financial Services is not and will not be liable for any advice given.

· Listen to how the other person is speaking
· Reflect back to the person speaking to you
· Our brain is broken into 2 sides.
· The left and right side
· The left side controls – reasoning, logic, verbal language
· The right side controls – lateral thinking, tone, imagination
· Response Styles – Judgemental, Interpretive, Supportive, Probing, Understanding
· Effective Listening – by asking questions
· Listening phrases – “ok, so...” and ‘So you...”
· Questioning is a way of getting someone to talk
· People listen for a maximum of 10 minutes before they turn off
· Offer solutions
· Slowly step clients through your processes
· Have scripts in your business or procedures to help you
· Give positive responses
· Address complaints then and there
· Be seen to be listening to the client
· Listen and hear the person speaking to you
· Face to face – maintain eye contact
· Each person has difference tendencies, have to learn to match or talk to different types of people.
· Repeating back to the person to show you are listening
· Take notes when speaking to someone.
· Open questions not closed
· Closed questions are one word answers
· Reflect and show understanding of discussion
· Double check with person to see if correct.
· Important Facts
· It costs 6 times more to attract a new customer than it does to keep an old one.
· A typical dissatisfied customer will tell 8 – 10 people about their problem.
· 70% of complaining customers will do business with you again if you resolve or handle their complaint in an empathetic manner.
· 95% of customers will do business with you again if you resolve a complaint on the spot.
